FOLLOWING THE PROTAGONIST

VIDEO ESSAY 5'13'' / 2022

The video essay is divided into the following comparative aspects, namely the unfolding of the protagonists, interaction with the camera and cinematography. This video essay shows how a protagonist can dominate the film direction and as filmmaker you have to engage with the characters in the film and give them free space to allow a closer relationship.

The documentary Grey Gardens (1975) by the Maysles Brothers, portrays the relationship between mother Big Edie and daughter Little Edie Bouvier, in their everyday life in the crumbling mansion Gray Gardens in the posh neighborhood of East Hampton on Long Island. The film is about shattered dreams and how the past can affect the present. The two protagonists seem to live isolated in a romantic dream world where they leave the villa to decay.
